Skills for Care update ‘Delegated healthcare activities’ guidance

The delegated healthcare activities that carers and personal assistants can undertake has ben reviewed and new guidance issued.

A delegated healthcare activity is an activity that a regulated healthcare professional, such as a nurse, nursing associate, occupational therapist or speech and language therapist, delegates to a care worker or personal assistant.

Examples of a delegated healthcare activity include:
■ supporting skin integrity and wound care
■ supporting a person to manage their diabetes through insulin administration and monitoring
■ supporting a person with catheter care
■ supporting a person to use a crisis plan for their mental health.

There are four guiding principles that must be adhered to before a healthcare activity is delegated. These are:

  • Person centred care planning and assessment
  • Governance, regulation and accountability
  • Learning and development, skills and competency
  • Monitoring and reviewing
